Sustainability in the construction industry could quite possibly be one of the most complicated areas to reach Net-Zero, due to how multifaceted the industry is. From remote locations with limited resources to the use of virgin materials; sustainability in construction is a challenge. A challenge that we’ve been on for a while.
Where we’ve been
We have a history of innovation. Since the beginning, our teams have worked to bring great products whilst reducing cost and impact on the environment. One of our first notable achievements was our Solar Loo winning the Green Apple award back in 2002, thanks to the patented solar equpitment and carbon-reducing technology.
Since then, we have created a whole eco-focussed product line with the simple goal of reducing fuel usage; therefore, limiting carbon emissions and costs. Our team are continuously researching, investigating, and testing the latest technology and materials for our future products to help us stay on track with our goal.
What we’ve achieved over the last 12 months
As a business, we look at every aspect to reduce our carbon footprint and overall impact on the planet. From purchasing environmentally friendly merchandise to awarding our teams when they ditch single-use plastics, these small details throughout our business can have a big impact on our goal. The points below are just a handful of the key areas where we have recently made big changes.
Our electricity is from a renewable source
The electricity we use across our depot network is sourced from renewable resources. This is one step toward us reducing our Scope 2 emissions
Company cars
Our company car policy has been to changed to only use vehicles that are hybrid or fully electric. We have also started to install electric car chargers at our Bury depot, with plans to expand this in the future.
Eco fleet training
All our drivers have undertaken Eco fleet training which provides ways to drive more efficiently to minimise emissions.
Continuous product development
In the first half of 2022, we released two new eco products; the Armadillo 4.0, and the Hybrid Welfare Van 2.0. Both products are some of our most economical yet. Reducing fuel usage and maximising solar energy by using the latest solar panels and generators on the market.
Materials
When we must use raw materials, we ensure they are sourced from sustainable suppliers, such as sustainable forestry sourced timber.
The next 12 months
Over the course of 2022, we are focusing on setting targets for our business. We will continue to heavily invest in sustainable technology to reduce our emissions and provide our customers with the knowledge and solutions to help them tackle their own emissions. Below are some key areas of the year ahead.
Biofuel
We are currently reviewing and testing biofuels, such as HVO (Hydrotreated vegetable oil), to replace, or use alongside, traditional fuel to reduce our Scope 1 emissions on our fleet of vehicles used throughout the business.
Science-based targets
We’re currently in the process of setting science-based targets to get to net zero by 2040. We want our path to net-zero to be clear, and we believe using science-based targets is the best way for us to achieve our goal.
Why we’re doing it
Our values at Garic are Be Better, Be Innovative, Do the Right Thing, Trust Each Other, and Work Together. The goal of us becoming net-zero by 2040 encompasses all our values, from working together, to being better, and why? Because it is the right thing to do for our planet, and for future generations.
