2022 marks 20 years since our Solar Loo won the Green Apple award for Innovation. The Solar Loo is a great way to reduce bills and stay compliant. Current regulations state that sites must provide toilet and washing facilities of a certain specification. This article summarises what is required, and how our Solar Loo can help.
What do I need to supply?
The Construction Design and Management(CDM) regulations advises that a certain level of toilet and washing facilities must be provided for workers. For your site to be fully compliant, the following must be supplied:
- Toilets should be lit and ventilated
- Hot water to wash hands with
- Fully flushable is recommended
- Sufficient soap or washing agents, such as sanitiser
- Supply of toilet paper
- For female employees, a sanitary bin must be provided
- Facilities should be cleaned regularly
- A means for drying hands either paper towels or a hand dryer
- The basin should be large enough to wash hands and forearms
How many toilets do I need?
CDM regulations advises that the number of toilets required depends on who is using them. The tables below provide guidance on how many toilets are needed.
The table below shows the number of toilets for mixed use by male and females, or females only.

The Solar Loo
The Solar Loo is a fully flushing toilet, a urinal, hot and cold water, a hot hand dryer, and 12v LED lighting which all run on solar power, so there is no need for a separate power supply. As stated by HSE, a fully flushing toilet is recommended over a chemical toilet for hygiene reasons.
As there is no generator, or external power supply required, the Solar Loo helps reduce your scope 1 emissions, and fuel bills dramatically.
Our unit provides you with the facilities to deliver maximum hygiene, even if your site is remote and without access to a water or electricity supply. This means you can be CDM compliant without having to compromise on sanitation.
